No change in the party rankings: the Social Democrats continue to lead

The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), led by MEP Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, continues to lead the party rankings. According to a Baltic Research poll conducted in April, 17.8% of the population would vote for the party if the Seimas elections were held next Sunday.

Support for the LSDP has not changed over the past month, with 17.4% of respondents intending to vote for the party in March.

The second place in the ranking table is occupied by the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Popular Union (LVŽS), led by Ramūnas Karbauskis, supported by 10.4% of respondents (11.6% in March).

A similar percentage of respondents said they would vote for the Conservatives led by Gabrielius Landsbergis. If the elections were held next Sunday, 10% of the respondents would vote for the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) (8.9% in March).

The Democratic Union In the Name of Lithuania , led by former Prime Minister Sauliaus Skvernelis, is not far behind the conservatives, with 9.8% of respondents willing to vote for it in April (9.1% in March).

For their part, 5.7% of respondents would have supported the Labour Party led by Andrius Mazuronis in April (5.6% in March), and 5.4% would have supported the Liberal Movement led by the Speaker of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen (4.9% in March).

Next in the rankings are the party Nemunas Dawn led by Remigijus Žemaitaitis, who broke his oath of office as a parliamentarian (4.3%), the Lithuanian Regions Party led by Jonas Pinskas, a member of the Seimas (3%), and the Party of Freedom chaired by the Minister of Economy and Innovation, Aušrinė Armonaitė (2.9%).

Also, the Freedom and Justice Party (2.1%) and the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania-Christian Families Union (2.1%), the Green Party of Lithuania (1.1%), the National Union (1%) and the Union of Nation and Justice (centrists, nationalists) (0.4%).

However, a quarter of the respondents indicated they would not participate in the Seimas elections or were undecided about who to vote for.

Public attention is focused on the forthcoming presidential elections.

Rasa Ališauskienė, Director of Baltic Research, says that the stagnation in the party rankings is most likely due to the ongoing presidential campaign. According to the sociologist, the upcoming election of the country's Head of State is currently at the centre of public attention.

„Now the orientation is more towards the personalities fighting for the main throne, while the parties seem to remain in the background,“ Ališauskienė told Elta.

Therefore, the sociologist argues that changes in the party rankings can only be expected once the Seimas election campaign gets underway.

„After the presidential elections are over, there will also be the European Parliament elections. (...) After these two elections, there should be a greater focus on the Seimas elections, and perhaps the population's sympathies will change to some extent,“ she said.

The poll took place between 10 and 21 April 2024. It involved 1,020 respondents (aged 18 and over) who were interviewed in person at 109 sampling points. The composition of the respondents corresponds to the composition of the adult population of Lithuania in terms of gender, age, nationality, and type of settlement. The people surveyed reflect the opinion of the Lithuanian population aged 18 and over. The margin of error of the survey results is up to 3.1%.
